Bishop Tim serves as the third elected and consecrated bishop of the Diocese of Butere. On his consecration, he chose William Tyndale, Translator of the Scriptures and Reformation Martyr, (1536) as his inspiring saint. The Most Revd Dr Eliud Wabukala the fifth Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya consecrated him on 6th October 2013.
As bishop, Rt Rev Wambunya chairs the diocesan synod and standing committee. The Bishop’s council (BC), a senior management team (SMT) and an executive management team (EMT) assists him in the day today management of the diocese. He is also patron of the diocesan trustees.
Currently, he is honoured to serve as the Chairperson of the provincial committee for education and trustee of the Kenya Anglican University. He leads the board of trustees at the African Institute for Contemporary Mission and Research. Bishop Tim also serves as the Chairperson of the board of management at Butere Girls High School – a national Anglican school founded by the Irish CMS missionary Elizabeth Chadwick in 1917 and the Anglican development services (ADS) – western region.
Bishop Tim began his ministry in Mombasa as a Lay Reader in 1988. Later he trained for ordination at Oak Hill, the premier evangelical theological college in the UK and was made deacon in 1997 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London by the Rt Revd & Rt Hon Richard Chatress. The Rt Revd Graham Dow in Willesden diocese priested him in 1998. Tim has over 25 years ministerial experience including: St Nicholas seafarers chapel in Mombasa, the Missions to Seamen centre in Hull, St Cuthbert’s in Portsmouth, St John’s Southall Green in Ealing, Emmanuel Church, Hornsey Road, London and Christ Church in Nairobi diocese. He is a former Principal of Carlile College of Theology and Business, the Church Army Africa training institution for Evangelists and Missioners.
Prior to going into full time ministry, Bishop Tim served in the Kenyan and British Navy on secondment where he trained to be a Marine and Mechanical Engineer specializing in materials and shipbuilding. He also received training in firefighting, nuclear, biological and chemical defense at HMS Excellent, UK. Later he taught metallurgy, firefighting as well as nuclear, biological and chemical warfare in the Naval/Marine School before resigning to pursue full time ministry.
